Frequently Asked Questions

What is Below The Radar?
Below The Radar is a series of free download compilations produced by The Wire magazine. Each volume is compiled by The Wire office staff as a showcase for just some of the underground, outsider and experimental music that has been featured in recent issues of the magazine. The compilations are made available exclusively to all of The Wire's subscribers, whether they subscribe to the print or digital editions of the magazine. The first volume was released to subscribers to coincide with the publication of the September 2009 issue of The Wire. Subsequent volumes are being issued on a quarterly basis.

Is the Below The Radar series replacing The Wire Tapper series?
No. Below The Radar will run in addition to The Wire Tapper (the series of new music compilation CDs that The Wire has been compiling and producing since 1998 and which are given away to all readers of the magazine three times a year. Apart form the fact that one is issued as a download and one is issued on CD, the main difference between the two is that the Below The Radar series is available only to the magazine's subscribers.

How do I submit music for possible inclusion on a future volume of Below The Radar?
First, send an email to btr@thewire.co.uk with some information on what you would like to submit.

Where do I find my subscription number and/or password?
If you subscribe to the print magazine, these are both found on the A4 address sheet accompanying each issue of your subscription, printed in the boxes above where your name and address appear. If you don't have your address sheet, please contact us via the Contact form. I tried to download the ZIP, but
1) the progress bar froze half-way so I canceled and tried again later, but then had 0 credits.
OR
2) the download of the zip dies halfway.
OR
3) I got an error during the zip download saying “Server not responding”.

This is likely to be a connection error in the path between your computer and our servers, especially if you are behind a firewall, share the connection between other people (e.g. you are at work or school) or have a weak connection (weak wireless, dial-up, etc). Transferring big files needs a fast and steady connection. That is why we implemented the download of each track separately. Please proceed downloading each track individually.

I am trying to download the PDF document with the sleevenotes for the Below The Radar compilation, but the document will not download.
This is likely to be a problem with your browser, blocking/hiding specific file types. Please try with another browser or make sure you do not have strange add-ons, special third party 'bars', blockers or your security settings are too strict (please allow www.dioenesmusic.com). We recommend the latest version of Firefox with no add-ons and no pop-up blockers.

I cannot find/open www.thewire.co.uk/btr
There are 2 possible causes:
1) your browser or internet provider requires you write web addresses with the "http:// prefix". So please try: http://www.thewire.co.uk/btr/
2) your browser has installed some add-on/blocker/navigation bar that is redirecting the BTR address into something else. Please try with another browser or remove conflicting add-ons.

I cannot unzip the file
This is likely to be a download error (e.g. The download stopped before the file was completed). Please refer to previous points and proceed to the download of each track separately.

I have downloaded the music (many thanks). On the webpage it says one successful downloads and two remaining downloads. Did I miss a lot of music?
No. The reason why you see this is because some people may have trouble downloading the tracks/ZIP in one go and it gives everyone another opportunity to try if this is the case.

Having trouble downloading. Can you advise?
Could you be more specific with the issue? Most likely you are having a problem with the zip. Please see the third point above and try downloading each track separately.

I get the following error message:
"Sorry - there seems to be an issue at the moment with retrieving the file requested."
OR
"Please try again in a bit and let us know if you still are experiencing the problem."

This is just a temporary hiccup of our server. Give it a few minutes and try again.

I tried to download the one big zip file for Below The Radio Volume 1. Then my browser crashed and now clicking on the download button has no effect.

Can you reset my download credit if I have tried unsuccessfully to get the tracks?
Yes we can but this should not be necessary if you download each track individually.

Can you e-mail me the ZIP files directly?
We cannot email you the ZIP nor any of the tracks as this is the exact purpose of the site. Please make sure you try again or download each track individually to ensure you get them all. We built this option for specific cases where download problems are encountered with the big zip file.

I've got an error downloading the files on Firefox (Mac Version)?
